چکیده

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) is a versatile crop that has adapted to the broadly different soil and environmental conditions throughout all continents. To date, fruits (“seeds”) of plant are only reliable source silymarin, which, given its recognized therapeutic effects many present potential uses, led significant re-discovery enhancement in recent years. Overall, although studies have been carried out globally on bioactivity, phytochemistry, genetics milk thistle, few discontinuous research activity conducted basic agronomy as well farm opportunities offered by cultivation this species. However, multiple uses reduced need for external inputs suggest can perfectly fit among most interesting alternative crops, even marginal environments. The growing interest natural medicine, increasing popularity herbal dietary supplements, possibilities livestock feeding arguments supporting idea rural areas, could represent tool enhancing stabilizing income. several issues still be addressed. species retains some morphological physiological traits belonging non-domesticated plants, which make application common agronomic practices challenging. Furthermore, lack field data devoted definition suitable cropping protocols represents major constraint spread farmers. This review therefore focused updating information main phytochemical characteristics novel uses. Several gaps technical knowledge addressed, further goals experimental outlined order guide farmers eager cope with such challenging resource-rich crop.

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Milk thistle is a well known and commonly used herb, used particularly in hepatic diseases. It has very potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties (1). As a single agent its therapeutic effects in liver disease appear to be modest (2,3,4,5). Herbal medicines and supplements are likely to be much more beneficial when used synergistically in combinations or formulas. Milk ...

A Review on Pharmacological, Cultivation and Biotechnology Aspects of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.)

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) is one of the valuable medicinal plants which used in the treatment of liver disorders. The major active constituents in this plant are flavonolignans, collectively known as silymarin which is a mixture of three isomer silybin, silydianin and silycristin. Its therapeutic properties are due to the presence of silymarin. The seeds contain the highest a...

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for a variety of ailments. The main component of S. marianum fruit extract (silymarin) is a flavonolignan called silybin, which is not only the major silymarin element but is also the most active ingredient of this extract, which has been confirmed in various studies. This compound belongs...

Phylogenetic and chemical diversity of fungal endophytes isolated from Silybum marianum (L) Gaertn. (milk thistle)

Use of the herb milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is widespread, and its chemistry has been studied for over 50 years. However, milk thistle endophytes have not been studied previously for their fungal and chemical diversity. We examined the fungal endophytes inhabiting this medicinal herb to determine: (1) species composition and phylogenetic diversity of fungal endophytes; (2) chemical diversit...

Flavonolignans from Aspergillus iizukae, a fungal endophyte of milk thistle (Silybum marianum).

Silybin A (1), silybin B (2), and isosilybin A (3), three of the seven flavonolignans that constitute silymarin, an extract of the fruits of milk thistle (Silybum marianum), were detected for the first time from a fungal endophyte, Aspergillus iizukae, isolated from the surface-sterilized leaves of S. marianum. The flavonolignans were identified using a UPLC-PDA-HRMS-MS/MS method by matching re...
